"You couldn't possibly," she said. "It'll be nice. I've been kinda lonely."
Inwardly, she sighed. She couldn't hope he'd be as randy and perverse as his brother, could she? Phoenix glanced up at the clock and gasped softly.
"I have to announce one more show, do a little number--then we can go, if you like. Do you want to watch?"

"Umm, s-sure" he smiled nervously, still clutching his necklace in his hand.

"Come on," she said gently, taking his free hand and leading him from the office. She'd make it short; she felt sort of protective of the kid.
Phoenix trotted on stage with practiced ease and warmed up the crowd with a few jokes. She's come into her own in the past weeks, the love of the spotlight far greater than that for the powder.
"I'd like to dedicate this song to a new friend," she said, winking at Benno. "I hope he doesn't mind."
Mama Thinks I'm living in a convent A secluded little convent In the Southern part of France Mama Doesn't even have an inkling That I'm working in a nightclub In a pair of lacy pants So, please, sir, If you run into my mama Don't reveal my indiscretion Give a working girl a chance Hush up, don't tell mama Shush up, don't tell mama
Don't tell mama whatever you do. If you had a secret you bet I could keep it I would never tell on you! I'm breakin' ev'ry promise that I gave her So, won't you kindly do a girl a great big favor And please, my sweet potato, Keep this from my mater, Thou my dance is not against the law You could tell my papa, that's alright! 'Cause he comes in here ev'ry night But don't tell mama what you saw!
GIRLS: Mama Since I wanted go to Europe With a couple of my school chumps And a lady chaperon Mama Doesn't even have an inkling That I left the morning after And I'm touring on my own So, please, sir, If you run into my mama Don't reveal my indiscretion
PHOENIX: Just leave well enough alone PHOENIX and GIRLS: Hush up, don't tell mama Shush up, don't tell mama Don't tell mama whatever you do. If you had a secret you bet I could keep it I would never tell on you! You wouldn't want to get me in a pickle And have a girl ain't cut me off without a nickel So let's cross one another Keep this from my mother Thou I'm still as pure as mama's soul You can tell my uncle here and now 'Cause he's my agent anyhow But don't tell mama what you know! You can tell my grandma, suits me fine Just guess s'mday she join the line But don't tell mama what you know! You can tell my brother, that ain't grim So if he squeals on me I'll squeal on him But don't tell mama, bitte Don't tell mama, please sir Don't tell mama what you know! If you see my mammy mums the word!
She flushed as she finished, despite the polite applause, because she somehow felt funny with the Emcee's sweeter brother in the audience.

Benno applauded with a smile, although the song was a bit, strange, for his taste, her performance was wonderful none the less.

Phoenix hopped off the stage after her bows, turned the place over to her second in command--the money had been deposited, and things were thinning out--and went to collect Ben.
"I hope it wasn't too shocking," she said. "I have to change. My clothes."

Benno nodded his head "It was fine, uncomfortable," he admitted "but fine, you were good."

Phoenix smiled sheepishly, suddenly looking much younger.
"Thanks," she said. "And... I'm sorry. I'll be out in a minute."
What was it, she wondered as she changed, that made her want to stay on Ben's good side? She'd as much as told her parents to f--- themselves when she'd left, and since then hadn't cared what she had to do to sing. Anywhere. And this kid, suddenly, made her recall how skimpy her spangled outfits were. It was stupid. Maybe it was just the contrast between him and his brother, when they had the same face.
She changed quickly and came back out.
"I haven't lived in Paris long, so I'm staying in a hotel," she explained. "There's plenty of room, though."

"Oh that's fine, I'f only been here a month myself" he said quietly, a little ashamed that it took him this long to find anything about his brother. The girl was nice, a little lost it seemed, but nice and he trusted that she wouldn't force him in to any situation he didn't want to be in.
Other than still being in the club that is Dreadful but that wasn't really her fault. He had to be there just too see the conditions that his brother had placed himself in.
It was a shame really, in Benno's mind, The Emcee could have been so much more...
Than just The Emcee.
"I vreally appreciate in vat you are doinks for me."

"It's no trouble," Phoenix smiled. "Besides, I doubt he'd be very happy if he learned I didn't do all I could for his brother. C'mon."
Phoenix led the way from the club and back to the Hilton.
