"Well. This is it," Phoenix said, turning on the light and tossing her purse on the side table. "Make yourself at home."

Benno stood in the doorway for a moment longer before taking a nervous step in "Eeet's very nice."

Phoenix laughed.
"It's a dump, but it's what I can afford, for now."
The hotel wasn't great, but she kept it neat. Now, anyway. Ever since... She suddenly noticed Ben's hesitation.
"Hey. You okay? Is... this okay?"

"P-probably not" he said with a soft chuckle "boot eet's allvright, somesinks you joost haf to do" he wasn't sure if he was making any sense. But he imagined that she would have realized that he was a good jewish boy and good jewish boy's don't stay alone with women they barely knew.
But he was a man now and a man can make his own decisions.

She wasn't sure what the problem was; no one she knew objected to unchaperoned co-ed visits. But she recalled his religious upbringing, and as difficult as it was to believe in someone with his face, it might be the root.
Phoenix tried to smile reassuringly.
"I know where you found me, and what it looks like," she said. "I can't say you're entirely wrong, either, whatever you're thinking. But you're as safe as you want to be, here. Do you want the couch, or the bedroom for more privacy?"

Phoenix smiled gently, for real, now. He was endearing, in his way, which was wholly different from his brother's. It was eerie, but... nice.
"That's reassuring," she laughed softly. "Let me get you some blankets."
She retrieved the extra sheets and a pillow.
"Are you hungry? Should I make us something?"

Her eyes widened.
"That's awful!" she said. "I can't believe that. Fine; we're getting you fed."
She glided into the kitchen and started rummaging. Oddly enough, the Emcee had inspired her, and while she wasn't a great cook her food was becoming edible. But she paused just shy of pulling actual ingredients out. She stared at Benno over the door to the icebox.
"Wait. You're Jewish, right? Don't you guys have, like, rules about food?"

Phoenix pondered this, trying to remember what was pork. Sausage was pork. She was pretty sure. The Emcee was a very, very bad man, she realized. She refrained from giggling, and pulled out bread and eggs and milk and some spices. And... Oh! Turkey sausage. She'd heard it was less fattening.
"French toast," she announced. "We're here, after all."
She busied herself in the kitchen. At least it was quick to make. She fried up the meat and the bread, setting it on her chipped plates and setting the plates on the table.
"I hope it's okay," she said. "I'm... really not that experienced at cooking. So it's breakfast for dinner."

Benno's mouth seemed to salivate ten fold from the time she said food till the time she put it down on the table "It all looks fine Mees Phee-oneex" he picked up the fork and the knife and began to eat "Eets delishwus!" He smiled with a mouth full of food.

Phoenix laughed delightedly and started on her own. He was being polite, but not much. And she felt good, that she could do this for someone.

"Then I feel really sorry for you," she said ruefully, taking a last bite of sausage. "Can I get you something else?"
