*Valerie's grave had been dug beneath a cedar tree. A priest clad in black read a psalm, and only Esme, Giles and Alexei were in attendance.*
((Godmoding Alexei, sorry, but I figured he'd be there?))

*It had not been easy, discovering Valerie's funeral. In retrospect, he ought to have stayed around, offered his resources to her family. Had he realized the Villiers were not taking an interest...
His mouth was set in a grim line as he marched towards the gravesite. His face was pale and drawn, and he felt curiously dead inside.*

((Yeah, he's here. What're we doing with this, again?))
*He stared straight ahead, not wanting to think about her going into the ground. Inside, there was an aching Valerie-shaped space where she had been but wasn't anymore, and now he didn't know what do to at all. His eyes were sunken and startlingly blue, and his skin was even paler than usual; he looked awkward in a suit and even more awkward with his hair combed properly.*
*Alexei didn't look grim, he just looked lost. Almost confused, even though he knew very well what had happened.*

*Valmont wondered idly if the pale, unfortunate lad had been his competition, but he hadn't the energy to scoff. He just stared down at the grave, regretting what would never be, though not entirely knowing what he wanted that to have been.
Surely, now, everything could go back the way it had been. It was over.*

*Alexei knew instinctively that this man was tied to Valerie. He didn't know how but he knew.*
*He met the gaze of his father, who had appeared (though only Alexei could see him), just as Alexei had asked. With all the obstinacy of youth and what he only now realized had been love, he'd begged and wheedled and pleaded for Valerie's life until finally his father had relented. He nodded with a gravity in his features that looked out of place on such a young man.*
*In exchange for Valerie's life, he was to spend the next eternity in service to his father as one of his many cronies. If she was lucky, a handful of decades, in exchange for the rest of his existence... but he was happy, in a way, to do it. He'd never felt right in this world, anyway. Perhaps as a messenger of Death, he'd feel more at home. His mother knew, his sister knew, and he was promised a meeting with Valerie before he had to leave this world.*
"Douche." *He muttered in Valmont's general direction... and he wasn't trying to speak French. In the next instant, he faded from the view of all those in attendance, save his father. His hair became blonder and his suit was no longer ill-fitting or wool, but black velvet with blue silk. This was it. Despite faith in what Der Tod could do, Alexei still felt a deep fear in the pit of his stomach that something would go wrong.*
((Cue Valerie! PS, nothing's going wrong he's just all antsy.))

*Valerie felt as though she had woken from a deep sleep, along with the curious absence of power and sensation she had possessed as the Slayer.*
"...why am I in a giant box?" *she wondered aloud as she pressed her hands against the nailed lid of what was her coffin.*
"Hello? Anyone?" *she called out.*

*The nails were pulled out and the lid moved by some unseen force, that force being Alexei (or his telekinesis, anyway), who, according to his father, Valerie should still be able to see.*

*Valerie pushed the lid off of her the rest of the way, straining as it was heavy and she felt strangely...weak. She blinked at Alexei.*
"What happened?" *she whispered.* "All I can remember is--" *she glanced down and pressed a hand against her torso where the bullet had entered her, feeling no trace of a wound.*

"You died." *He said softly, offering her a hand to help her out.* "But you're alive now."

"...right. That makes sense," *she muttered, taking his hand and using him to pull herself to her feet.*
"...why? I mean--how am I...alive. Again?"

*He smiled sadly.*
"I've entered the service of my father in exchange for your life."

*She stared at him.*
"...Alexei..." *she whispered.* "No...no. I'm not worth that. Don't...you shouldn't have..."
*She glanced down at the coffin she was standing in.*
"Can't you put me back?"

"Nein, Valerie. It doesn't work like that... and who's going to miss me but my mother and sister? I'm not meant for this world, Fraulein."

*Something flashed in her eyes. Anger, perhaps, or hurt confusion.*
"But...your mother and sister...they're not JUST anyone! How am I worth more than both of them?"

"Weil ich liebe dich." *He admitted softly, not meeting her gaze. He began backing away, and as he did so, beginning to fade from even her sight.* "Know that." *His eyes flicked up and met hers.*
((Because I love you))
