*Valerie stood on the sidewalk, with her satchel stuffed with clothes and three crates of her father's books on the ground beside her--she would never leave those behind. She sighed and wondered if she should go beg mercy from Alexei or Giles...or whether her pride could bear spending a month sleeping on the street.*
The nights are warm...
*Lugging around the crates slowly, one at a time, for short distances and with difficulty due to being heavily pregnant, she found her way to a small park and settled herself on a bench, with the books in their crates piled about her and an old cloak for a blanket with her satchel as a pillow.*

*Valmont strolled by on his way to the library--he'd been going every few days, but hadn't seen Valerie--and might have missed her altogether if he hadn't dropped his copy of Wuthering Heights right in front of her.*

*Her eyelids fluttered and she stirred a little, her cheek pillowed on her hand.*
"Careful the binding..." *she murmured sleepily.*

*Valmont bent to pick up the book, surprise by the waif's concern until he looked closer.*
"Good lord! Miss Valerie?"
*He remained crouched on the ground in an unsightly fashion.*
"Valerie, what are you doing out here?"

"Until about thirty seconds ago, I was sleeping," *she said with a yawn, rubbing her eyes with one hand and pulling the cloak she was using as a blanket further over her shoulders.*

*Valmont quickly reminded himself that he hated her, but that his undignified concern was validated by services she'd rendered. However nebulously that made sense.*
"Here? No," *he said decisively.* "Get up. You're coming with me."

"What? Where? Why should I?" *she said, more defensive than usual because sleep blurred her thought processes and made her feel strangely vulnerable.*

((She's more defensive than usual? So that's 11, then?))
"To a bed with a proper duvet. Don't worry, not mine; I wouldn't touch you now with my oldest gloves on, so you can rest assured on that account."

((I know, right?))
"I know, I know, no one goes for the girl with the grace and girth of a three-legged cow," *said Valerie, sitting up slowly, pausing to grimace and press a hand to her midsection.*
"Dieu...my back," *she gasped faintly.*

"Not unless there's something dreadfully wrong with him," *Valmont agreed, surprised she was so reasonable. Her groan forced him to reevaluate his no-touching rule, however.*
"I'll hail a cab."
*He did so, and one stopped presently. Valmont offered his arm to the girl, his brain a swirling mass of contradictory impulses that mostly consisted of asking what on earth he was getting into.*
Should just drop her off at a workhouse for unwed mothers.
"A Much Nicer Hotel than the Hilton," *he told the cabbie as he helped Valerie in.*

*Valerie took the offered arm--she wasn't stupidly stubborn...all the time. She sat back against the seat with a small sigh, her eyes falling shut for a moment before she gasped and leaned forward.*
"My books!" *she tried to stand up again.* "In the crates..."

*Valmont stopped short of closing the door, jolted by her cry. He rolled his eyes but tapped the top of the cab with his cane to stop it from moving off.*
"Stay here," *he growled, and stepped off the carriage. Good lord, the girl gets kicked out of wherever and her worldly possessions consist of crates of books? Books weren't cheap; she could have sold them.
This was not his job. This was why he had footmen and a valet and all that rot.*
"Here!" *he called to the cabbie.* "Something extra for you if you'll haul these up as well."
*His air of dissolute command--and his expensive apparel--decided the man and they were soon settled in the cab with a crate up top with the driver and the rest in the cab.
Damned inconvenient.*

((Dude, where is she now? And I assume Alexei just kind of... knew about the pregnancy and didn't comment or something. Because he's awkward like that. Better to ignore the belly than make awkward comments.))
