*It made Buffy uneasy, seeing Spike so jumpy. Maybe it would be better to be alone. But she had been alone for so long, it seemed, and Spike was as close to home as she was likely to see in some time. Unless they could find a way back.
Back to a world Spike painted in no attractive way.
She kicked at a rock on the path.*
"I wouldn't want you getting, you know, staked or anything. Unless it's by me."

*The stroll brought back old familiar feelings. But in a nice way. Spike felt more comfortable walking. His tone was lighter.*
"Seems only fitting. Are there other nasty beasties I should be looking out for? Ones that might hold ill will to the friendly neighborhood bloodsuckers?"

*Buffy grimaced.*
"Dracula's in town. God, he was always that annoying, wasn't he? And there are some freelance vampire hunters. And..." *She snuck a glance at Spike.* "The vampires here--some of them don't work like you."

Sounds like fun...potential for a good spot of violence. Hey, wait...
*Spike turned to her confused, unsure if he was supposed to be offended by that last comment.*
"What'd ya mean by that?"

*Buffy glanced away, biting her lip, though she kept walking.*
"I mean... I met a vampire here. Sarah. I was going to slay her, of course, but we started talking. I don't know why, I mean, I don't usually make with the chit-chat. But she was different. She didn't know what a vampire slayer was, and she said that she drank, like, once a year and none of her people ever killed. And they don't seem to have the same exact strengths and weaknesses as you. I mean, the stakey-crossy-stuff. It's like... that thing Anya said once, about parallel universes without shrimp. Except here, the vampires work funny."

Looks like the Slayer's gone soft...or loony.
*Spike eyed her for a moment, trying to decide if she was messing with him. Then he let out a hearty (if short-lived) burst of laughter.*
"Once a year? Bloody hell...that certainly would make things easier."
*He glanced at her with a playful smile.*
"Though your job might change quite a bit."
*He processed that thought to a logical conclusion.*
"So...you ain't been working much here then, eh?"

*Buffy twisted her hands together.*
"No, not really." *She blushed.* "You think I'm all mushy or something. I'm not. I just... it's hard to kill you guys when I never see you do anything. No one even fights me! I mean, except Dracula, but I already hate him, so that's not an issue." *She pouted.* "It's really not fair."

*Spike curled his lip up in that sexy Billy Idol way he does. Then he bit his lip and gave her a smile.*
"Well...if you ever want some company on patrol...or to get some fight practice in...I'm your man. I don't want to go soft here either."

*Buffy blushed slightly in relief. He wasn't going to call her on it? Something really was wrong.*
"Yeah. Thanks. I... I'll probably take you up on that."
*They were being civil with each other. God, it must be Hell.*
"I, um... This is my stop. Thanks. For the walk and for not taking advantage of the situation." *She eyed him sharply.* "Not like you could or anything. I can totally kick your ass."

*Spike grinned mischievously.*
"I'm sure you could. Any time."
*Awkward for a moment, he pulled on his cool demeanor, trying to protect her from these strange feelings.*
"But I've learned a few tricks since the last time we scuffled. Don't think I'll take it easy on you. That would defeat the purpose."

*Buffy shook her head decisively.*
"No, no taking it easy. You think I want your half-assed efforts?"
*His utter failure to be a jerk was spooking her.*
"So, um... I'll see you, then."
*With that, she turned and disappeared into the Opera House, not daring to look back for fear of what she'd see in his eyes.*
((wah wah wah))

*Spike watched her head back inside.*
That went well. Kinda.
*He shrugged and pulled up the collar on his jacket. No use in turning into a brooding sod like Angel. Just wait it out, she'll come around. Again. And this time...he'd do better. He turned and walked back to the darkened avenue and into the night.*

***TOTALLY THE NEXT NIGHT***
*Spike got his lurk on, hoping that Buffy might patrol.*
That girl makes me so pathetic.

*Buffy had spent the day trying to distract herself. Talking to Mel, looking for Dracula, the usual stuff. Pawing through the costumes for something decent to wear. But it wasn't a substitute for good old-fashioned slayage. Too bad the vamps and baddies here were totally unlike the ones at home. Everything was far too complicated. Walks were nice and simple, though.
And now Spike had shown up, just to make her life--or whatever--that much more ridiculous. Spike didn't used to be so ambiguous. It wasn't fair.
But then she remembered when he called a truce, for the sake of ManU--whatever that was--and when he kidnapped Willow to do a love spell (of all things) and when he came to them for help and when they gave it to him and when he--*
"Oh. Hey. I um... I didn't see you there."
*Damn. She'd gone straight to the cemetery.*
