*He mused on this for a moment.*
"Perhaps that's what I should have done instead of running off. Would have been just as scandalous and far less... well, vampiric. Then again I'd never have met you." *He said cheerfully.*
*It was then that they passed a brothel, where two young men were being thrown out and refused service for their level of inebriation.*
"And stay out!" *Screeched the Madam who had done the deed, slamming the door. Truly, the boys didn't look like they were going to last on their feet for too long.*
*Derek sighed.* "They're going to be dead in a few hours from poisoning, which isn't a pleasant way to go. Shall we?"

"Oh yes. I want that one," *she said, pointing to one, as he tripped over his companion's feet, knocking them both to the ground.*

*Derek nodded, letting go of Marishka's arm in order to help the other young man up. As soon as he'd done so, however, he drew the handsome dandy to him, biting swiftly into his neck and beginning to drain him of blood.*

*Marishka did the same, approaching the other man who tried to slur something flirtatious at her. She ignored him, and before his dulled senses could react, was on him, biting into his neck.*

*Derek pulled off just as the man's heart stopped beating.*
"Pity, really, they were both very pretty." *He said, slurring his words a little.* "Oh dear." *He said, laughing a tad drunkenly.* "Ffforgot drunnksss did that." *He managed to toss the body in the Seine without much effort.*

*She giggled and dragged the other man's corpse toward the water, though she stumbled a little on the way. Which made her giggle more.*
"Ohhhdear."

*He helped her move the corpse into the water, not teetering exactly but not perfectly balanced. Then he looked over at her.*
"You know you'rrrrre vverry pretty too." *He said seriously, then totally ruined the moment by laughing.* "Whoopss I prromissed mysself I wouldn't ssay that."

"Ohh, Derek you're sweet. And drunk. And sweet."
*She looked around.*
"Maaaybe we should get off the street."

*But with that he planted a kiss on her face. Really it was a credit to his German heritage that he was sober enough for it to hit its mark, her mouth.*

*She was absolutely shocked. For about two seconds. Then she kissed him back, wrapping her arms around him.*

"My fflat is two blocks down." *He said, tugging on her hand. This was the 19th century; they were like to be arrested for public indecency.*

((Reclaiming my thread! Which is meant to reek of 18th century-dom!))
Jeanne was a countess now, with the African page and the pet monkey and the exotic bird menagerie and the large triangular royal blue quilted skirt that was not even half so charming to the eye as the well-made underclothes beneath it to prove it, but in her head, while riding in her carriage, she allowed herself to remain Jeanne on the inside. It wasn't there to keep her modest and remind herself where she came from. It was a little arc of triumph, a one-word victory speech: Jeanne, Jeanne, Jeanne. The word crowned herself. The reminder made her more settled in her haughtiness, more comfortable.
No, she thought, settling back against the comfortable seat, which made up for the discomfort of the corset, stroking her cleverly trained little monkey on the head; she was not a laundress or something like that, not a common whore, not even a courtesan. Jeanne had become king's own mistress. It was a title. It made her part of her court. And afterwards, the dauphine herself had needed to address her before everyone else.
Such a lot of people in Versailles today! - Yes. All of them here to witness me in my glory.
Although this measure of recognition was not quite enough for her. The more people Jeanne charmed, the better for her. There would never be an end to her list of conquests, she expected.
Peering coyly through the lace curtains on the inside of her carriage, she rapped on the wall before her suddenly very loudly to signal to the coachmen that she would be stopping soon. Up ahead, some distance ahead, she took note of a well-dressed gentlemen, which was not her only criterion, by any means; there was something in his walk that she thought she'd liked.
She whispered something to the monkey, pointed, whispered some more, and then deftly unlatched the window. He climbed out, chattering, and loped over to the gentleman in question, tugging on his pantleg and looking up at him. Clever thing!
Jeanne, in the meantime, leaned out of the window and cried out after him, "Monsieur!" Then, to the coachman - who stopped himself from eye-rolling - in a sweeter tone than her rapping had just been, "Oh, please stop the carriage!"
He did. She deftly adjusted her hat in a matter of seconds and opened the door, stepping out delicately in a large bubble of opulent gown, running as quickly as she could towards the "escaped" animal. When she had reached him, she paused, cheeks reddened and chest heaving from the short burst of energy, fanning herself with a certain daintiness. "Pardon the intrusion." Flickering her eyes to her monkey, she jerked her head back imperiously. "Up, you!"
He chattered and climbed up her proffered arm to sit on her shoulder and teased a strand of hair apologetically. He did not know what his mistress intended, of course, he never did, but he knew that he was well-loved and well-cared-for, particularly when he played these games; and, besides, they were enormously fun for him. In the meantime, Jeanne du Barry's eyes had flickered back to the gentleman, red lips parted as though a moment away from another sentence, a boldness in her expression that seemed to be daring a comment on her...extravagance.
It was a ruse, yes, but such a rousing one!

And roused Valmont certainly was, despite knowing that this was the full intent of her game. He recognized her, of course--who did not know Mme. du Barry?--but as yet they had not exchanged a thing. Despite her much higher conferred rank, Valmont was not overwhelmed by her attention, though he was secretly glad of it and counted it as a sort of victory already. Such a thing, to fall into his lap as it were!
He smiled cordially (though there was always something of the predator in his smile, no matter how charming--or perhaps it added to it) and bowed deeply. "He meant no harm, my lady, I am certain," he said. "You need seek no pardon from me, as it was not you who interrupted. As for him, the monkey need not. No creature so charming can be considered an interruption at all, for a welcome intrusion ceases to be one."

Jeanne pursed her lips, face still flushed, still smiling. He was too charming. It made Jeanne wonder why he was not already part of her company, or the comte's - perhaps it was deliberate. She had suspected Louis and her husband both carefully steered her away from anyone who might compromise their own positions, and certainly she knew how flighty she herself could be. But the king was dead - long live the king - and she had long since tired of the comte, which he well knew. And whether it was approved of or not, Jeanne could choose her own company.
She looked sharply to the monkey, pursing her lips as though for a kiss. He chattered and leaned forward to kiss her cheek noisily, and she returned her attention to the gentleman. It had been a display, of course, of her own boldness, of the fact that she did not wear pastels and strolled with a monkey on her shoulder, and the monkey obeyed her every command, just as she'd taught him to. That, and they had already used the monkey as a shallow liaison between them, for propriety's sake. "I am glad you find him so. When he isn't leaping out of carriages, he is a very good boy. Perhaps I will arrange for you the privilege of joining him for tea." She flashed a smile, a bit of a wild one herself. "I do enjoy having men in my debt afterwards."
