*Richard's smile was easy and feral. Well. That was all right, then.*
"Glad tidings that are also true!" *he said, impressed.* "Tell me, wise women, how come I to such a fortune. Is the path I am on that which fate hath decreed, or is there aught else to be done? A sacrifice at your altars, perhaps?" *he said, jokingly, in a jovial mood.*

*One of the others leaned toward him*
"No blood. But the soul of your firstborn."

*They were beggar women in a bar. Richard had no fear of them, for such things did not appear in bars. Not in this day and age.
And he would have answered the same, perhaps, had he thought the question legitimate.*
"I offer it without question," *he said cheerfully. What use had he for souls, for firstborn?* "What use it is to you, good women, this humble slave of fortune cannot say, but it is yours."

*The third woman smiled*
"The soul pledged in darkness is ours. You shall have your power- maintaining it is your affair."
*The first turned her head*
"But know this- there is a man who rides at night known as the Hessian. WIth his skull, you may command him. He is a force greater than an army."
*They seemed to vanish into the crowd*

*Richard blinked at them, something telling him that all was not well. Or at least, all was not as it seemed. It was doubtful he'd have objected, had he known the truth.
Just as long as Marie didn't know. If, after all, Marie was the mother. Richard shrugged unevenly, ordered another drink (which he tossed back quickly), and made his way back to Marie.
He had plans to set in motion.*

*Muttering darkly under her breath, she all but slammed into the bar, and headed straight for a table* "Beer! NOW!" She half-hollered, and a startled waitress brought a glass over. It was over, all over. She didn't know how she'd screwed things up so badly, but there it was. Not only had she done something to that kindly Rochester, but her entire plan for that lot in the arrondissement had backfired. Backfired in the worst possible way.* F**king Lucheni, RUINING everything like that. Why the hell did he have to go and screw it all up?!*Now, what had become the object of her obsession had completely vanished into the immaterial, and one not of her jurisdiction at that. Finally, the beer arrived, and she all but slammed it back and demanded another one. Heck, forget beer--this might be a straight Tequila night *

**BECAUSE BARS ARE THE MOST MAGICAL PLACE OF ALL**
Reese sat with her feet up on the bar nursing a beer, she wasn't drunk, but she wasn't sober, she was just right.
There were some men looking at her with that eye and she simply rolled her eyes "Sorry boyo's, Oi'm only inta the ladies" they growled and went back to their drinks.

*Girls, Alex mused, were very confusing.
Take Lizzie. Nice girl. Eager, sensual, silly. Perfect and lovely. Didn't know what she wanted. Then again, neither did Alex. Did they have to? Why couldn't they just... do? And see what happened?
Alex bellied up and ordered a beer in time to hear Reese's comment. She smiled to herself.*
"Irish, are ye?" *she asked, her on brogue coming out.*

"No shame in that," Alex said. Her own accent, by this point, was a mishmash of Irish, English and whatever she'd picked up in Paris. She shook the girl's hand. "Alex," she said. "And in case it's not clear on the tin, we've got more than a taste in lager in common."

Alex knocked back her own beer, laughing.
"Not as are open about it, no," she said. "But there's fun to be had, if y'look." She shook her head. "Then again, there's always the impressionable young thing who doesn't know any better."
She felt disloyal, even saying it.

"Oim sure dere be plenty of em 'ere in Paris" her grin growing wider by the second. If anyone was paying attention, which no one would, it would seem as if the corners of her lips had curled and her eyebrows seemed to arch further than normal.
But it wasn't as if anyone was paying attention.
"S'ard ta be loike us 'ere, Oi mean, they coll it the ci'y of love roigh? Oi ain't feelin' da love."

Alex, for one, was not paying close attention, working as she was on her second beer. She'd taken in Reese's general attractiveness and that was pretty much it.
She laughed.
"I know what you mean," she sighed. "But it's a right shame--pretty thing like you should have her pick."
