"I'm NOT going to read The Babysitter's Club to you. Especially when I'm eating; I'll lose my appetite. Pick something better and we'll see how it goes, hm?"
*She pointed him in the direction of the shelves.*
"Go."

*Valmont stood his ground.*
"Good lord, not this. No. And not now. You can pay me later. Or read whatever you're reading."
*He was afraid he'd lose her if he let her out of his sight.*

"I couldn't afford to pay you," *she said, though the corners of her mouth quirked with humour at the idea of subjecting him to a reading on mucus plugs and the stages of labour.*

*Valmont rolled his eyes. She was being deliberately obtuse.*
"Pay me in reading. As if I need help paying for dinner from a single-mother librarian.* "Look. Do you want a better meal than you can afford or not? I assure you, it's a better deal than any other you've had recently."
*He pursed his lips and glanced with uncharacteristic indelicacy at her stomach.*

"Dieu, don't tell me you've taken an interest in the health and well-being of my unborn child," *she said dryly.* "Come on, then. Where are we going? I've got to be back by one."

"Don't worry. I hate children," *he said reflexively.* "We're going to Maxim's. They know me there--we'll get served quickly."

"I'm not overly fond of them, myself," *she said conversationally as they left.*

***AFTER LUNCH***
*Valerie went back to work, but Giles soon gave up, shaking his head.*
"Where is your concentration?" *he snapped.*
Where am I going to live?
"It's nothing," *she mumbled--she had her pride. She knew Giles wouldn't let her sleep on the streets in any case, much less a girl in her condition, but she was supposed to be taking care of herself, damnit.*

*Valmont--after determining that Valerie had gone back to her mysterious underground job--strode into the library and asked the girl at the desk for a sheet of paper.*
Dear Valerie--
I hereby repay any debt that may lie between us and relinquish any claims, real or imagined, either of us may have on the other. I believe that, given your assistance and patience, the debt rather lies on my side. Therefore please accept this payment for the many inconveniences I have caused you. No doubt you believe I will call it in at a later date and refuse to take it, but recall how very angry I have made you and how richly I deserve to be taken advantage of. As to what hold it may imply, recall how little money must mean to someone like me.
Aside from which, if you refuse it, no doubt this Danielle creature will benefit, and we surely cannot allow that.
Sébastien de Valmont
*He retrieved a copy of Les Liaisons dangereuses, folded a month's rent into the note and the note into the book, and left it at the desk with Danielle and strict instructions to give it to Valerie and no one but.
For good measure, he checked out a copy of Jane Eyre, after some confusion regarding the name of the author of that other book Valerie had made him read.*

*Valerie took the book when Danielle handed it to her on her way out and slipped it into her bag distractedly, not even glancing at it as she made her way home.*
Dieu, my landlord is going to kill me...

**NEW DAY** *Having acquired a taste for literature, Lucy had decided to head on down to the library and peruse the titles there. The incredible size of the place and the sheer number of books was almost overwhelming, and she was completely lost as she poured over the various titles and authors, unsure of where to start first. So many possibilities, and so many of them sounded exciting. How to choose? *

***NEW DAY***
*Following a day in the basement doing more training with Giles, Valerie wearily headed back upstairs to the library and grabbed a copy of Oliver Twist to shove into her bag and read on the walk home. She took out an apple and bit into it, flicking through the Dickens she knew so well--it was a comfort to return to old books, like old friends, knowing they would never change.*

***NEW DAY***
*Valerie had gone to the library to chat with Giles for a while. Esme had said she would meet her, there, and then they would go out for lunch somewhere. After her talk with her mentor, she'd gone about the shelves to pick some books to take home.*

*Charlotte stepped into the library, and glancing around, saw no one.
Well. She could wait. She had come this far...sources had led her to this library.
Valerie soon appeared, already absorbed in a book balanced on top of the pile of volumes she carried.
She only looked up when she heard the click of the pistol in Charlotte's hand.*
"...what do you want?"
"Silence."
"I can promise you that."
*Charlotte chuckled dryly.*
"I don't have any reason to trust your word. Not when you're the church mouse and I'm richer than God."
*At that moment, Giles appeared, holding a gun of his own, aimed at Charlotte.*
"Put the gun down--you don't have to hurt anyone."
"Yes I do," *said Charlotte hoarsely.* "No one can ever know...ever know who I truly am."

*Valmont had (fortunately or not) never returned several books he'd borrowed while under Valerie's influence. And he had at last gathered the courage to do so; he still trembled at the thought of her, but he had attempted to do the right thing and not talk to her, or seek her out, though he had delivered little gifts. Anonymously.
His timing was such that he missed the cause of the altercation.*
((Just putting him close by so he can swoop in when needed.))
