*Valerie showed up at the library wearing a plain blouse and a pair of trousers she'd borrowed from Alexei and quickly hemmed and belted so they wouldn't trip her up or fall down. She found Giles in his office, and together they went into the basement, locking the door. Giles set down a pile of archaic-looking volumes on a table while Valerie inspected the training equipment.*
"I'm already healthy..." *she said.*
"Of course you are," *he replied.* "You're a Slayer. You're bound to have better immunity, faster healing, and generally better reaction-times, speed, agility, etcetera. But we've not even begun to scrape the surface, Valerie..."
*He started her on some warm-up exercises before beginning to carefully teach her different hits, kicks, and blocks, all the while explaining to her the history of Slayers and vampires.*

*One day, a few weeks into her training, Giles handed Valerie the Scythe. It felt heavy and somehow RIGHT in her hands. Her palms tingled slightly as she hefted it.*
"You already know how to use this--we've been over the rules of fencing and axe-fighting, etc.. with a singelstick. Now you're going to get used to the Scythe--blindfolded."
*He tied a silk scarf securely across her eyes. Valerie snorted.*
"I'll kill someone."
"No, only the forces of darkness, hopefully. And soon. Your training is nearly finished."

*UPSTAIRS IN THE ACTUAL LIBRARY*
*Valmont had avoided the library for a few days. All those books...
No. It was Valerie. His confusion over her. Why didn't she just lie down and let him get on with it? Or if she wanted it against the wall, that would be fine, too. He wasn't picky.
Plus, he hadn't anything to read. He was bored. Imagine that.
He was astonished to find a dismal looking, pockmarked thing behind the desk. Slouching and scratching at its hair.*
"Where's Valerie?" *he demanded without preamble. The thing looked at him with watery eyes of indeterminate color.*
"Um... who?"
"Nevermind. I want a book. Er... what do you recommend?"
*The girl got up and slouched over to a shelf, where she pulled one of a set of bright, pastel paperbacks out by the spine and handed it to him.
It said The Babysitters' Club.*

*Valerie strode past the counter and towards the door with a copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting in her satchel. Her stomach growled slightly--either she was going to give birth to a werewolf, ((wait, this being the 'verse and a Warbaby, that could happen,)) or she'd put off going for her lunch break by over an hour to practice blocks with Giles. She had a thin scratch along one cheekbone, and a bruise on her temple, but she was getting faster.*

*Fast as she was, Valmont put out a hand to stop her.*
"Wait--where have you been?"

"At the library--where I always am," *she said with a shrug.* "It's not like I have a life," *she said, though her usual dry sarcasm was laced with an uncharacteristic bitterness.*

*Valmont lowered his gaze significantly.*
"Circumstances would beg otherwise," *he said.* "I haven't seen you."

"I've taken new work in another part of the building," *she said vaguely.*

"And what am I supposed to do?" *he asked, gesturing with the Babysitter's Club book.* "I've nothing to read."

*She glanced at the title and snorted back a laugh.*
"Try picking one for yourself," *she said, waving a hand at the shelves filled with enough titles to daunt even your average bookworm.* "You have half a brain, I presume. And I'm on my lunch break." *She turned to go.*

*Valmont was seized with a sudden madness. It was the only explanation.*
"Let me take you," *he said quickly.* "It would at least involve better food."

My innuendo-gland just burst.
*She eyed him suspiciously.*
"In return for what, exactly?" *she asked calmly.*

*Valmont was not stupid. He knew all about pressing his luck.*
"Reading to me. Though not while you're eating."
