They'd gone to a bookstore and she'd picked out some books for him - nice, inoffensive books, she thought, so that even as he could read them and research the tone would not be too dark or heavy. (At the checkout, she said they were for his niece's birthday and clung to him, hoping it'd bolster his mood to display to everybody in the store that they were in a relationship.) They also bought a couple of magazines of men's fashion, as he seemed quite interested in the topic.
Afterwards, although she didn't want to affect her appetite too greatly before the luncheon, they went to another café and ordered a sizeable number of coffees, only one of which was hers.

The fashion magazines were laid aside and neglected, however, in favor of a bland little blue-colored volume with a white back. Loki slouched over them, terse and frowning.

Teja sipped her coffee and quietly reminded him to drink his periodically, while playing solitaire on her Wagner deck and trying not to look at the pictures.

He looked up at Teja, wide-eyed and aghast.

She set her cards down and scooted over to put her arms around him.
"You can stop time - or make people not notice us - anything you need if you want to talk without being heard," she murmured.

The sound of the cafe dulled to silence, though the other guests still moved and spoke.
"This is madness-" he muttered, flipping forward a few pages and rubbing the side of his neck in agitation.

"Don't take it to heart - stories are twisted in the telling, we have no idea what they might have originally been-"

"This happened," he said wonderingly and a little miserably.

She gently touched the book so that she could see which story it was and peeked.
It was the story of Thrym's wedding, which was, by all accounts, a hilarious story where the Loki of the myths showed himself brilliant as usual.
"It did?"

He nodded without looking at her, tilting his head at the book.

She put her hand over his.
"Will you tell me about it?"

"How did they know this a thousand years ago when I was only a child?"

She looked troubled.
"I couldn't say-"

He pawed through the book to the end of the story and glanced at it.
"Heh."
