((He'd end up thinking about her during it, anyway.))

*Gawain manifested outside the door, card still in his hand. That was a new experience. He looked around cautiously, but the only movement was a few black feathers that drifted to the floor around him. He stepped forward and knocked on the door.*

Valmont--valet-less, naturally--was forced to open the door himself.
"Ah," he said, registering neither surprise nor any other emotion when he saw the young man. "You came to discuss that little matter of employment. Come in." The man must have lost the clinging woman at some point; Valmont was secretly glad he'd come, if only to amuse himself by further drawing the story out, but outwardly was only cool politeness.
He opened the door and turned without waiting for Gawain to follow, seating himself casually with one leg tucked under him on the divan.
"What questions do you have for me?"

*Gawain stepped in, shutting the door behind him. He stood before the man, nodding to him politely.*
"I appreciate your invitation. I am merely curious the details of the employment that you're offering."

Valmont appraised him, eyebrow raised.
"Have you ever been employed as a valet?" he asked. "I ask merely because your bearing is suitable and your appearance respectable enough." He wasn't certain he wanted to train one--dreadful messy business, that--but he'd have to draw the man out a little to make up his mind.

*Gawain shook his head.*
"No, sir. I do not even know what one is, truly. But I am interested in seeing the world, learning it. I..." *He thought on how to put it.* "I do not believe that my current environment will allow for such exploration."

Valmont pursed his lips.
"From what I have seen of your... current environment, I would say that's an astute observation. A valet is, basically, a gentleman's attendant. Were you to work for me, you would perform those duties I cannot be bothered with: caring for my clothing and wigs, drawing baths, scheduling and making travel arrangements, and in general making my life easier. In return, on top of your salary, you would receive the benefit of my position in society: travel, access to new... environments, the benefit of my vast experience."
He tilted his head coolly.
"But you are oddly regal looking to have such ignorance. What is your current position?"

"I am..." *Gawain started, only to correct himself.*
"I have been entrusted as a Guardian. A..." *He looked for the words to explain further.* "...a protector and soldier of sorts."

"Hmm," Valmont said, eyes narrowed. "I don't especially need a bodyguard. There's something... ineffable about you." He waved his hand vaguely towards Gawain. "You don't look like a soldier. Tell me," he continued, his voice carefully idle, "you and the young mademoiselle were discussing your future. What is it you want?"

*Gawain sighed slightly, his gaze drifting.*
"I don't know what's available. I've spent my whole life locked away in a fortress, catering to others. Doing as I'm told. I suppose that it's a fine way to live, but..."
*His brow furrowed slightly.*
"...I think I should like to experience more of the world. To see more than just the same thing day after day."
*His eyes met the man's seeking understanding.*

There was something straightforward about the man Valmont found interesting, the sort of innocence that strays because it does not know any better. As a student of innocence--or rather, its corruption--Valmont saw Gawain almost as a test subject. The man's otherworldliness might prove him a fascinating case--even if Valmont had to take on the tiresome business of training him.
"Well," he said. "I cannot say you would not be catering to me--it's what I would be paying you for. But, depending on your talents and your proclivities, I don't see why it wouldn't be a fruitful union, if you take advantage of it. As long as you aren't taking advantage of me--and I would know. I meet a wide range of people, with a wide range of... interests. Not to mention a wide range of ladies' maids--and ladies too, who are often not above lowering themselves."
An eyebrow cocked again.
"Do you think you might enjoy catering more, in such an environment?"

"Yes." *Gawain answered easily and without hesitation.*
"And I have yet to hear a task listed that I believe I would be incapable of performing."

Valmont's cool eyes swept over him.
"No doubt," he murmured slyly. "Well then. I will take you on, on a provisional basis." Naivete and his own curiosity would not make up for wrinkled shirts or lukewarm bathwater, but they would serve for a start. "When can you begin?"

*Gawain blinked only once.*
"Now, if that is your pleasure."
