The encounter with Alain had pretty much ruined whatever good feelings László had built up thanks to his improved quality of life. It seemed, to him at least, that whenever he started having good things happen to him, bad things showed up to wreck it. It made him rather broody and morose, and as he had once before was sinking into self-doubt and restlessness.
He couldn't seem to relax, or even get his mind off of it. Trying to forget Alain's reappearance just made him recall the first time he'd ever seen the bastard, and how creepy he'd been. He hadn't abused László, no, but the former rentboy had still found the man extremely unsettling. Like the veneer of charm was hiding something nastily unpleasant.
Singing out his feelings did not help, reading did not help, none of his usual diversions did. So he decided to try a different one: grabbing a bottle of booze off a shelf. Being still somewhat inexperienced with the stuff, however, he didn't realize he was messing with a strong vodka. Although it did make his eyes water and burn a hell of a lot when it went down, he didn't let it go.
The result of this being that he was completely plastered and so off-balance that when he started down the stairs, halfway down he didn't so much walk down as fall.

The shelter had been unusually quiet, with most of the normal tenants not showing up.
It was getting colder and it worried John that he hadn't seen a lot of the older people that made their home there, as of late. Nor many of the families, he hoped it was because they'd found shelter somewhere else, but it was a fleeting hope.
He'd been up cleaning the tables, when he heard the sound of Laszlo falling down the stairs.
Dropping everything, he rushed to help whoever it was.
"Laszlo, are you all right?"

László sat up and grabbed John's arm.
"Just...fine..."
Even those two words were barely coherent, and the slurred coupled with his accent made them almost impossible.
"Noooo problem."

"Oh jesus" John whispered "have you been drinking?"
He helped Laszlo up with a concerned look.

László leaned heavily on John as they stood.
"Mmmaybe." He said with a giggle, and then kissed John rather hard on the lips.

For a moment, John kissed back, but couldn't allow himself to take advantage of the situation and pulled away "Laszlo, come on let's go sit next to the fireplace, and- talk okay?"
He held tightly on to the other man and lead him over to the large couch in front of the fireplace.

"Oh-kaaaay." He drawled, still leaning heavily on John as the walked.
Once they reached the couch, he fell rather than sat on it. Nice and cushy. Good, it was better than the ground, which kept moving and made it hard to stand.
"I slept on a couch." He slurred. "But it was outside instead of in a living room. Someone threw it inna alley."

"That must have been terrible" he sat down slowly next to Laszlo.

"Nah-uh." He said.
"Made my job easy. Jus' go back to th' alley an' give 'em what they pay for."
He grabbed John around the waist.
"What they want."

"Laszlo, just-" he grabbed his arm to stop him.
Not like this.

"What?" He said with a giggle--but it was a very strange giggle. Very little mirth and filled with bitterness.
"Isn't that what you all want?"
He latched onto John with both arms.
"Hmm?"

"No" he said matter of factly "not like this, not when you're upset like this."

"I'm not upset." He said, leaning on John heavily.
"I feel greeeeat."
He kissed him again, just as wantonly as before.

John didn't wait this time and pushed him off "That's because you're completely trashed Laszlo, don't do this, please" he took Laszlo's face in to his hands and tried his best to convey his feelings through a warning stare.

"Not trashed, trash."
He gave another one of those humorless laughs.
"Don't, don't. Terrible liar. You all want the same thing, you said you wanted me, can't lie."
