Kat had left dinner and returned to a small drawing room in their apartments to do some needlework. It wasn't that she particularly enjoyed sewing, or was much good at it, it was that it seemed to be the default activity here. Books were not plentiful enough to always be accessible, so she sort of resorted to embroidering something that might have been a pillow-case once when she was bored.
It was cathartic, at least. Soothing and simple.

After dinner, Cesare had spent some time with Lucrezia before she started dozing off. He took her up to her room, kissed her good night on her forehead and then decided to wander a bit. Eventually, he wandered past the drawing room and was planning on passing by and just heading to his room but a head of red hair made him turn back.
"Miss de Winter," he said from the door way.

She nodded a greeting. "Has Lucrezia gone to bed?"

"She has," he said, entering the room and sitting down across from her. "Poor girl. It seems like it was too much excitement for one day."
The warm, low lighting made her hair seem redder and her skin fairer. It took quite a bit of effort to avoid staring.

"I'm glad you were able to come all this way--she was pining," Kat admitted with a small laugh. "I think I'll head up soon, if she's asleep. As scintillating as needlework is..."

"So soon?" he said, almost as if it were a challenge.

"You've cross-stitched one flower, you've cross-stitched them all," she said dryly.

He grinned.
"How about a slightly more challenging activity?"

"And what did you have in mind?" A smirk crept across her face.

Cesare leaned in and paused for a moment before answering.
"Chess," he said simply.
He turned and gestured towards the set on the table across the room.

Needlework was set aside and she rose to move towards the chess set. She caught his eye.
"I haven't played in ages..."

He held her gaze for a moment before getting up and moving over.
"No worthy opponents?"

"Now why would you assume superiority over simple disinterest?"

Cesare smirked and sat down on the black side.
"Women who are disinterested in strategy never last very long," he said as he set up his pieces. "And you seem to be fairing well."
He looked up and held her gaze. "Call it gut feeling."

"As it happens, you're right." She turned the board without breaking his gaze. "You take white."
